ಯಾವುದೇ ಒಂದು ನಾಡಿನ ಏಳಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದುಡಿಮೆಯ ಪಾತ್ರ ಬಲು ಹಿರಿದಾಗಿದ್ದು, ದುಡಿಮೆಗೆ ಕಲಿಕೆಯು ಮೊದಲನೆಯ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲೆಂಬುದೂ, ಆ ಕಲಿಕೆಯು ತಾಯ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿದ್ದರೇ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮವೆಂಬುದೂ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಾದ್ಯಂತ ಸ್ಥಾಪಿತವಾಗಿರುವ ದಿಟವಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಏಳಿಗೆಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರ ತಾಯ್ನುಡಿಯಾದ ಕನ್ನಡವೇ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಸಾಧನವೆಂಬುದೂ, ಹಾಗೇ ನಮ್ಮ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಕಲಿಕೆ ಅತ್ಯುತ್ತಮವಾಗಲು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಧನವಾದ ಕನ್ನಡನುಡಿಯ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನವಾಗಬೇಕೆಂಬುದೂ ಮತ್ತು ಆ ಅಧ್ಯಯನದ ಫಲವು ಕನ್ನಡಮಾಧ್ಯಮದ ಕಲಿಕೆಯೇರ್ಪಾಡಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಅಳವಡಿಕೆಯಾಗಬೇಕೆಂಬುದೂ ಬನವಾಸಿ ಬಳಗದ ನಿಲುವಾಗಿದೆ.
ಈ ನಿಟ್ಟಿನಲ್ಲಿ, ಫೆಬ್ರವರಿ 7, 2010ರ ಭಾನುವಾರ ದಂದು ಬನವಾಸಿ ಬಳಗ ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ "ನುಡಿಯರಿಮೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕಲಿಕೆ" ಎಂಬ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನಕ್ಕೆ ಭರ್ಜರಿ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಯಿತು. ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಡಿನ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಭಾಷಾ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂಚೂಣಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ನಾಡೋಜ ಡಾ. ಡಿ.ಎನ್. ಶಂಕರ್ ಭಟ್, ಡಾ. ಕೆ.ವಿ. ನಾರಾಯಣ ಮತ್ತು ಅಮೇರಿಕದ ನ್ಯೂಯಾರ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸ್ಟೋನಿಬ್ರೂಕ್ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯದ ಪ್ರಾಧ್ಯಾಪಕರಾದ ಡಾ.ಎಸ್.ಎನ್. ಶ್ರೀಧರ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಹಿರಿಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ತಜ್ಞ ಡಾ.ಎನ್.ಎಸ್.ರಘುನಾಥ್ ಅವರು ಪಾಲ್ಗೊಂಡು ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸ ನೀಡಿದರು.

ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ "ನುಡಿಯ ಕಲಿಕೆಗೆ ಸೊಲ್ಲರಿಮೆಯ ನೆರವು" ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸ ನೀಡಿದ ನಾಡೋಜ ಡಾ. ಡಿ.ಎನ್. ಶಂಕರ್ ಭಟ್ ಅವರು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪದಗಳು, ಅವುಗಳ ಒಳರಚನೆ, ಅವುಗಳನ್ನು ಜೋಡಿಸಿ ಬಗೆ ಬಗೆಯ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡುವ ಪರಿ, ಆ ವಾಕ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿ ಬರಹವನ್ನು ಬರೆಯುವ ಬಗೆ ಹೇಗೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದೇ ಸೊಲ್ಲರಿಮೆಯ ಮೂಲ ಗುರಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ, ನಿಜಕ್ಕೂ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಸೊಲ್ಲರಿಮೆಯ ಸ್ವರೂಪ ಎಂತಹದು ಎಂಬುದರ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಅರಿವು, ಹೇಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡವನ್ನು ಓದಲು ಬರೆಯಲು ಕಲಿಯುವವರಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್‍ನಂತಹ ಬೇರೆ ನುಡಿಯೊಂದನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯುವವರಿಗೆ ನೆರವನ್ನು ನೀಡಬಲ್ಲದು ಎಂಬುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿವರಿಸಿ ಈ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕೆಲಸಗಳಾಗಬೇಕು ಎಂದು ನುಡಿದರು.

ಎರಡನೆಯದಾಗಿ "ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷಾ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡ ಸಮಾಜ" ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸ ನೀಡಿದ ಡಾ. ಕೆ.ವಿ. ನಾರಾಯಣ ಅವರು ಕನ್ನಡ ನುಡಿಯರಿಮೆಗೂ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಸಮಾಜಕ್ಕೂ ಇರುವ ನಂಟನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ತಿಳಿಸುವ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಗಳು ಬರಬೇಕಾದ ಅಗತ್ಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಭಾಷೆಗಳ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾಷಿಕರ ನಡುವಣ ಸಂಬಂಧದ ಕುರಿತಂತೆ ನೀತಿಯೊಂದನ್ನು ರೂಪಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಅಗತ್ಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡ ನುಡಿಯ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ರೂಪಿಸುವ ಯೋಜನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ಯಾವ ತಳಹದಿಯ ಮೇಲೆ ಕಟ್ಟಬೇಕು ಎಂಬುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆಗಬೇಕಾದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತನಾಡಿದರು. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲದೇ, ಕನ್ನಡ, ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್ ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಗಳ ನಡುವೆ ಇರುವ ಮತ್ತು ಇರಬೇಕಾದ ನಂಟನ್ನು ಕುರಿತು ಚರ್ಚಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ಅಗತ್ಯವನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದರು.

ಮೂರನೆಯದಾಗಿ "ಭಾಷಾವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರು" ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸ ನೀಡಿದ ಡಾ. ಎನ್.ಎಸ್. ರಘುನಾಥ್ ಅವರು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಬಹುಪಾಲು ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಲ್ಲಿ ಭಾಷಾ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಎನ್ನುವ ವಿಷಯವೊಂದು ಇರುವುದರ ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆ ಇರುವುದರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅರಿವು ತುಂಬಾ ಕಡಿಮೆಯಿದ್ದು, ಭಾಷಾ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇರುವ ತಿರಸ್ಕಾರ ಭಾವನೆಯು, ಭಾಷೆಯನ್ನು ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಲಿಸುವಲ್ಲಿ ಹೇಗೆ ತೊಡಕುಂಟು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದರು. ವಾಕ್ಯ ರಚನೆ, ಫೊನೆಟಿಕ್ಸ್ ಮುಂತಾದ ಭಾಷಾ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಭಾಗಗಳ ಅರಿವು ಭಾಷಾ ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರಿಗೆ ಇದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ, ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಭಾಷಾ ಕಲಿಕೆಯ ಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗಬಹುದಾದ ಲಾಭದಾಯಕ ಪರಿಣಾಮಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿವರಿಸಿದರು.

ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ "ಕನ್ನಡದ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಭಾಷಾವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಏಕೆ ಬೇಕು? ಮತ್ತು ಅದನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸುವ ಬಗೆ" ಎಂಬ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸ ನೀಡಿದ ಡಾ. ಎಸ್.ಎನ್. ಶ್ರೀಧರ್ ಅವರು, ಇತರ ಭಾರತೀಯ ಭಾಷೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೋಲಿಸಿದರೆ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಭಾಷಾವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಇನ್ನೂ ಎಳವೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವುದನ್ನು, ಕನ್ನಡದ ಬೆಳವಣಿಗೆಗೆ ಭಾಷಾವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಯಿದೆಯೆನ್ನುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯವರೆಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಜನರ ಗಮನಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದಿಲ್ಲದಂತಿರುವುದು ಇದಕ್ಕೆ ಕಾರಣವೆಂದು ವಿವರಿಸಿದರು. ಭಾಷಾವಿಜ್ಞಾನದಿಂದಲೇ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಸರಿಯಾದ ಸ್ವರೂಪದ ಅರಿವು ನಮಗಾಗಬಲ್ಲುದು ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡದಿಂದ ಅತಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಲಾಭವನ್ನು ನಾವು ಪಡೆಯಬಲ್ಲೆವು. ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ಭಾಷಾವಿಜ್ಞಾನವನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಅತಿಮುಖ್ಯವಾದ ವಿಷಯವಾಗಿ ವಿಶ್ವವಿದ್ಯಾಲಯಗಳು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸಿ ಈ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಬೋಧನೆಗಳು ನಡೆಯಬೇಕು ಎಂಬ ಆಶಯ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸಿದರು.

ಪ್ರತಿ ಉಪನ್ಯಾಸದ ನಂತರ ಆಯಾ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣ ಚರ್ಚೆಗಳಾದವು. ಭಾರತದ ಹಲವೆಡೆಯಿಂದ ಬಂದಿದ್ದ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಮತ್ತು ಭಾಷಾ ವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ವಿಷಯ ಪರಿಣಿತರು ಈ ಚರ್ಚೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಹೊಸ ಮೆರುಗು ತಂದರು.

ಇದೇ ಸಂದರ್ಭದಲ್ಲಿ "ಎಲ್ಲರ ಕನ್ನಡ" ಅನ್ನುವ ಅಂತರ್ಜಾಲ ತಾಣಕ್ಕೆ ಚಾಲನೆ ನೀಡಲಾಯಿತು. ಇದು ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರೆಲ್ಲರೂ ಬಳಸುವ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಭಾಷಾವಿಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಕನ್ನಡ ಮಾಧ್ಯಮದ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯನ್ನು ಕುರಿತ ತಾಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕನ್ನಡ ಭಾಷಾವಿಜ್ಞಾನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಲ್ಲಿ ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೆಚ್ಚಿಸುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶದಿಂದ ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಡೋಜ ಡಾ. ಡಿ. ಎನ್. ಶಂಕರಭಟ್ಟರ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಹೊತ್ತಗೆಗಳನ್ನೆಲ್ಲ ಉಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಪಿಡಿಎಫ್ ರೂಪದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಡಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಮುಂದಿನ ದಿನಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂತಹ ಅನೇಕ ನುಡಿಗೆ ಸಂಬಂಧಿತ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮಗಳನ್ನು ಹಮ್ಮಿಕೊಂಡು ಭಾಷಾವಿಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ತಜ್ಞರು ಕೂಡಿ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಲು ಮುಂದಾಗಬೇಕಾದ ಅವಶ್ಯಕತೆಯನ್ನು ಇಡೀ ಸಮ್ಮೇಳನ ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಒಕ್ಕೊರಲಿನ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯದ ಮೂಲ ಹೊರಹೊಮ್ಮಿಸಿತು.

At Banavasi Balaga, we believe that education is crucial for development and that mother-tongue is the best medium of instruction. Against this backdrop, Banavasi Balaga is organizing a Symposium on Kannada Linguistics and Education on 7/2/2010 in Bengaluru. Please note: This programme is for invitees only.


Background and objectives

In the last couple of decades, Kannada linguistics has undergone important changes. Many deep-rooted beliefs about the nature of Kannada have been subjected to scientific enquiry and a few proven as incorrect. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Kannada linguistics is now proceeding in a new direction – on a path bathed in the bright sunlight of science.

Importantly, grammarians have realized that it is unscientific to tweak the grammar of Sanskrit to try and fit it to Kannada. Instead, grammarians are now seeking to build a true grammar of Kannada. This true grammar of Kannada is not only an accurate-by-far description of Kannada, but also very easy to learn.

Similarly, linguists have now realized the unscientific nature of the now deep-rooted belief that new words can be added to Kannada only by coining them in Sanskrit. Instead, they are now understood the power of Ellarakannada (Everyone’s Kannada) as a source of new words. These words are not only easy to pronounce (for Kannadigas), but also easy to coin.

Also, research is being conducted on ways of improving the Kannada script in order to rid the language of spelling problems. Many linguists believe that a reformed Kannada script would help make teaching it to children easier.

While these scientific changes are happening in the field of Kannada linguistics, the Kannada-medium education system has almost entirely remained aloof from them. Hence, teachers and text-book writers are facing a lot of difficulty in teaching the nature of Kannada, in coining new terms of Science and Technology, as well as in teaching to write Kannada. Many linguists and educationists are of the opinion that these impediments are inhibiting the growth of the coverage and quality of education in the Kannada medium.

We believe that the need of the hour is for people from these two fields – linguistics and education – to come together and discuss ways of improving the status quo. Thus, the first and foremost objective of this Symposium is to arrange for some of the most important people in these two fields to get together under the same roof. Discussions need to happen about the output of research in linguistics and its application to education. Also, discussions need to happen about the changes which need to be made to the Kannada medium education system and the role of linguists therein. These discussions can help set priorities for future work in both fields. To make these discussions happen is the second objective of this Symposium. We have arranged four lectures from senior workers in this field.
